Majority of three and four letter .eu names registered

Research by WebHostTalk.eu found that those now wanting to register a short domain name are likely to have to go to domain auction sites to secure the web address of their choice. The survey by the European web hosting forum discovered that many of the shorter .eu domain names are in the "sunrise" period of registration, while others such as sex.eu, cars.eu and fun.eu are already capped or active.

More than two million .eu domain names have already been registered since the launch of the European top-level domain name earlier this year. The WebHostTalk.eu report points out that longer, more descriptive domain names, such as findwebdesigner.eu, onewebhost.eu, and vacationandtravel.eu are still vacant and available for registration.

Domain name auction sites and sellers are becoming increasingly common, with many companies realising that large sums can be made by tactically buying and selling web addresses.

Domain name registrar EURid recently suspended 74,000 domain names after a number of companies appeared to be manipulating the registration system.

Final preparations for new .asia domain announced by ICANN

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced that final preparations are now in place for a new .asia top-level domain (TLD). Experts predict that the new web address for the Asia Pacific region could prove as successful as the recently-launched .eu European domain suffix.

Internet oversight body ICANN is working with DotAsia Organisation to develop a new .asia generic top-level domain (gTLD). The two organisations have reached a proposed registry agreement to work towards final approval for the .asia address.

Asia currently accounts for around 60 percent of the world's population and 40 percent of global telephone lines.
