News: Hurricane Katrina affects the online world
The storm, which devastated parts of the South East United States
and the Gulf Coast, including the city of New Orleans, has left thousands
of people homeless and ruined scores of businesses. And now, online
scammers have reportedly started to exploit the disaster caused by
Hurricane Katrina.
Web criminals have set up websites and are sending out spam emails
to persuade web users to donate money for the victims of the hurricane,
VNUNet reports. The SANS Internet Storm Centre has reported that it
has suspicions about websites Katrinahelp.com, Katrinarelief.com and
Katrinacleanup.com and has contacted the hosting companies, but they
have refused to take the sites offline. Meanwhile, others are seeking
to profit by registering domain names related to the hurricane, Aboutkatrina.com
and Katrinaphotos.com, are both on offer for around $10,000.
However,
there is a glimmer of hope as the owner of katrina.com has dedicated
her website to helping people affected by the hurricane. The site
began receiving thousands of hits and email inquiries after the
disaster, which prompted the owner to turn the site into an information
portal and forum for those searching for assistance and loved ones.
