Search
engines - no. 2 in web activity |
Using
search engines has reportedly become the second most popular Internet
task among US web users. A new report from the Pew Internet &
American Life project reveals that search engine use is gaining
rapidly on email as the primary use of the Internet.
According to the study, 60 million adults in the
United States use search engines on a typical day. Search and news
had previously been competing for second place, but search engines
have now forged ahead.
The findings use results from the Pew Internet &
American Life tracking surveys and consumer behaviour trends from
the comScore Media Metrix consumer panel to present as clear a picture
as possible of US Internet use.
Pew Internet Project data from September 2005 indicates
that use of search engines on a typical day has soared from 20 percent
in June 2004 to 41 percent of the internet-using population. The
number of people using search engines on an average day leapt over
the same period, from 38 million to 59 million.
According to the project, email use on a typical
day is still the top internet activity, with around 52 percent of
American internet users sending and receiving email, up from 45
percent in June of 2004.
The comScore
Media Metrix results show that Google attracted the most users in
October 2005, with 75.3 million unique visitors, while Yahoo! drew
68 million. Google users conducted an average of 35 to 40 searches
over the month, compared with 25 to 30 for a typical Yahoo! customer.

Engine Users can see your website in at least the top 20 results
