WIPO reports cybersquatting increase
The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has warned that cybersquatting is a growing problem on the internet. The United Nations copyright and trademarks agency claims in a new report that cybersquatting cases rose by 20 percent last year, with a host of individuals, companies and organisations lodging complaints.

Geneva-based WIPO registered a total of 1,456 cybersquatting complaints filed with its Arbitration and Mediation Center in 2005, including cases involving Ralph Lauren, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the English Premier League, artist Damien Hirst and actor Morgan Freeman. Cybersquatting is the abusive registration of trademarks as internet domain names and celebrities, companies and organisations have all fallen victim to the trend.

The WIPO Arbitration Center has handled a total of more than 8,350 domain name disputes, covering 127 countries and 16,000 web addresses since the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy came into force in December 1999. The organisation's deputy director general Francis Gurry said: "The fact that WIPO's caseload in 2005 was the highest in four years and that many of these cases concern recently registered domain names, underlines the need for continued vigilance by intellectual property owners." Mr Gurry added that, although the majority of disputes concerned .com addresses, a process for dealing with abusive registration of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) must also be put in place.
