Early success for .travel
The new .travel generic top level domain (gTLD) has witnessed rapid growth since its launch 16 weeks ago. In less than four months the sector-specific web address has registered 16,162 .travel domain names, according to the latest figures from registry Tralliance Corporation. Amongst those that have registered .travel addresses are leading companies British Airways, Expedia, Fairmont, Kruger National Park, TUI, Raffles Hotels and Resorts, Marriott, Carnival Cruise Lines and Disney.
Tralliance held a meeting in New York on January 29th for industry leaders and travel experts from around the world to celebrate the official launch of the .travel domain. The .travel web domain has been approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and has now completed an initial limited launch period for trademark holders.

President of New York-based Tralliance Corporation, Ron Andruff, said: "As the logical expansion of the domain name system and technology advancements continue to propel the internet revolution, the travel industry - the largest industry in the world - is the first to make a unified effort to remove their products and services from the anonymity of the .com web to institute its own identity through an industry-specific space on internet."

In New Zealand demand for dot-travel domain names has been strong from the start and kiwi travel and tourism operators have showed their interest in being part of this important international domain name space.

Demand strong for .eu domains

More than 71,000 .eu domain names have been registered in the first hour of the .eu web address opening to Sunrise Two applications. The European Registry of Internet Domain Names (EURid) has announced that around 900 registrars have now started sending in the applications they received from candidate domain name holders from across the European Union. The new top level domain name (TLD) for the EU looks set to be a huge success with European organisations, companies and individuals.

Since early December, just trademark holders and public bodies have been able to apply for .eu domain names, but EURid has now opened up the system for the Sunrise Two period of application to those claiming prior rights over domains. According to EURid, the first three applications sent in on February 7th were webdienst.eu, dax.eu, and videoclips.eu. The top four most requested names were sex.eu (23 applications), schumacher.eu (15), realestate.eu (12) and business.eu (12), while the largest proportion of .eu applicants came from Germany.

At present, EURid is only accepting applications from holders of prior rights and public bodies, while from 7th April, anyone within the European Union to apply for any available domain name.
