A Dispute Resolution Service has been introduced by the Office of the Domain Name Commissioner to assist with disputes that may occur about who should be the registrant of a .NZ domain name. |
Over 200,000 domain names are currently registered in the .NZ space (eg. Domain names ending in .nz such as domainz.net.nz), and thousands of new domains are registered and renewed every month. The vast majority of these domain name registrations and renewals are processed without any problems, but from time to time, cases arise where someone makes a complaint about a registered domain name.
There are a number of reasons why a domain name registration may be disputed however it is important to appreciate that in the .nz space domain names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Some examples of common reasons why a domain name registration is sometimes disputed by a third party or complainant may include:
1) Registration of a competitor business name as a domain name.
2) Use of a well-known company or trademark in a domain name.
3) Registration of a domain name under an employee (or former employee) name or an agent name (eg. a web designer etc.)
4) Registration of a domain name with the evident intention to on-sell the domain.
There may also be other scenarios that could create a dispute between two parties, as these are only some examples. Please note that we are providing this information for your reference only. We are not suggesting that disputes related to any of the cases listed above will be successful. Domainz will not participate in any way in any dispute between the Registrant and any party other than Domainz regarding the registration and use of the domain name.

Protect your brand online. The tasks associated with protecting a company's name have changed significantly in the last few years as a result of the Internet.

New Zealand and International companies can be exposed to a range of threats from people hijacking their URLs in order to divert traffic from the website, an internet security expert has warned. Writing in Accountancy Age, Edward Taylor from .uk domain name registry Nominet has outlined some hints for evicting hijackers and typosquatters. Firms' reputations can be badly damaged by cybersquatting, plagiarising or anti-corporate websites and it is important to protect brands online.
Typosquatters divert web users to a completely different site if they accidentally type in the wrong URL for the company they were searching for, causing confusion, diverting possible revenue and affecting company images. The incorrect URL will attract a percentage of the site traffic for the legitimate company, so variations of web addresses such as Google will attract a high number of visitors.
Web browsers do not automatically correct spelling mistakes and Mr Taylor advises companies to register variants of their online name to prevent typosquatting and malicious links. Non-English letters and characters are often used to trick users into visiting a website other than the one they intended to reach.
As New Zealand’s most experienced domain name registrar, Domainz provides a range of services to help New Zealand businesses protect their online brand.
